Tom Waits for no man exhibition, KKNK 2013.

The work “Eye for an Eye” represents an emotive response to some of Tom Waits’ songs. It takes its name from “Black Wings” (take an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth), but there are other references to Waits: “Bone Machine”, “Burma Shave” (liquorice tattoo…the moon was like a bone…her hair spilled out like rootbeer…my heart pounds just like thunder don't know why it don't explode), “Swordfishtrombones” (Perhaps this yarn's the only thing that holds this man together). I let the smokey, underground-kind-of-dirty, gravelly, grainy sound and words filter into my creative process, which was a kind of complicated, obsessive, slightly louche and hippy rhythmic dance. Through the repetitive actions of weaving, plaiting, twisting, cutting, pulling and sanding, the sculpture became a hairy extension of my thoughts.
